Best skier on the planet - fight me

Proof That Colby Stevenson is the Best Skier in the Game

By: Scott Naismith November 27, 2024

Colby Stevenson’s first solo project, Proof, puts it beyond doubt that he is the best all-round skier on the planet. Following an award winning, standout performance in last year’s Good Company film Crescendo, Colby ups the ante – landing NBDs in the backcountry and riding his rowdiest lines to date.

The park skier to backcountry-booter-buff career arc is well trodden. Everyone from Pep Fujas, through Dane Tudor to Henrik Harlaut have left their footprints down that path – each going further than the last. Colby, in what seems to be a short space of time, has taken up the baton with his ability to seamlessly transfer tricks from the park into the backcountry environment with apparent ease.

The two last tricks in this film are simply insane. Colby shows extraordinary control on both tricks – grabbing both before and after buttering off the step-down knuckle and riding out like he never left the ground. Landing these tricks on a similar park feature would be pretty breathtaking, doing them in the backcountry is remarkable.

However, as impressive as his jump riding is, that is not what makes Colby stand out.

To succeed in Alaska takes time, gained experience and a good helping of skill. Sammy Carlson recently explained in an interview that it took him over six years to feel comfortable riding up there. Colby, however, has made that step look easy. After watching the spine that he rides at the start of the Alaska segment you’d be forgiven for thinking Colby was an experienced freeride athlete, not the man who just won the first World Cup slopestyle event of the year. Colby’s ability to do both at the highest level is nothing short of mind-blowing.

If Colby gets an invite to Natural Selection, which is hopefully inevitable, he is going to be very hard to beat. He is surely the best skier on the planet currently, here’s the Proof.

Proof is in the progress.

This is my 5th season filming backcountry, and first solo project. Every year getting more familiar with the mountains, and changing how it’s possible to approach them. From Utah, to Wyoming, to Alaska, I risked it all for this one.

With only six weeks of film time, we gave everything to this project. Conditions lined up and allowed us to maximize productivity. A bad crash on Feb 14th (as seen in the final segment) left me with a sprained neck, but luckily recovered after three weeks.

My childhood friends, Jack Francis and Justin Mayers, put in 110% effort to capture this cinematic experience. The support we received from Monster Energy, Oakley, K2 Skis, Ski-Doo, Freefly Systems, and Alpina Watches brought our production value to new heights, and we are forever grateful.
