ASH by Magma is a cinematic lament for a European spring gone by, one that was thoroughly enjoyed.
Filled with nostalgic moments, this uplifting film transported me back 14 years. Like a half remembered dream, the memory of a transition specialist hitting the concrete electricity tower supports and paravalanches of the Arlberg came flooding back – deliberately or not this is a homage to Poor Boyz Productions’ Revolver.
That’s where the similarities with Simon Dumont’s part ends, as, much like lava reshapes the earth’s crust, the Magma crew creates anew, breathing fresh life into these famously recognisable spots.
Beautifully framed to the breathtaking backdrop of the Alps, Alex Hall and Hunter Hess’ riding is equally as impressive as the scenery – from switch triples to alley-oop doubles – showcasing their signature blend of technicality, creativity and style.
Elias Syrjä’s cameo manages to stand out against the numerous aesthetic bangers – his switch tail butter bio 900 is a work of art.
The filming, the soundtrack and the skiing combine to make this Magma’s best offering so far – a masterpiece.
