AbsolutPark celebrates 25 years

November 09, 2024

The AbsolutPark at Shuttleberg in Flachauwinkl/Kleinarl is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Austria’s largest snowpark has evolved since its founding in the 1999/2000 season into a globally unique training hub for freestyle snowboarding and freeskiing.

In the upcoming winter season, freestyle enthusiasts at Shuttleberg can look forward to a very special celebration: AbsolutPark turns 25! What began as a hobby among school friends has developed over the past two and a half decades into one of the most innovative and sustainable snowparks for professionals and beginners worldwide. Today, a significant portion of the area between Flachauwinkl and Kleinarl features numerous snowpark lines, including kickers of all sizes, countless rails, corner jumps, a halfpipe, the Chill House at the park’s end, and a dedicated park crew—all key elements of its success.

Early Beginnings

Thanks to the efforts of current manager Seppi Harml, his friends, and his family, the first kickers were built in 1997 on what is now the “Powder Shuttle” freeride area.

“It wasn’t easy to establish a snowpark in a region filled with successful ski racers,” said Harml. “Many decision-makers were focused on traditional ski racing, and in the beginning, we needed a lot of patience, passion, and persuasion. With the first few hours of snow grooming we were allocated, we were able to build a small ‘Boarder Park’ during the winter of 1997/98.”

Three seasons later, in 1999/2000, the move to the Hubertus Lift area marked a turning point, and the AbsolutPark was officially born.

A Rapid Ascent

Once established, the AbsolutPark quickly gained momentum. Shortly after the millennium, two major events were launched: the SpringBattle and JibKing. In 2010, the ZSAEP Experience was added. Today, the SpringBattle is one of the most popular competitions worldwide, attracting elite athletes from the USA, Japan, Australia, Scandinavia, and across the Alpine region to Salzburg’s Pongau.

Significant Investments in Infrastructure

Key infrastructure milestones include the construction of the “Chill House” in 2006—a freestyle base with a bouldering wall, skateboard mini ramp, and large panoramic glass facade at the park’s base—and the AbsolutShuttle six-seater chairlift. In 2008, the “Stash” terrain park was developed near the Powder Shuttle. Major earthworks in 2012 elevated the big kicker line to a world-class level for professional training. Additionally, a new reservoir above the MediumLine has ensured snow reliability and an extended season since 2012. The Kleinarl side also saw the introduction of the CrossRun for snowboard and ski cross events.

Sustainability at the Core

From the start, ecological considerations and sustainability have been top priorities for all developments at Shuttleberg. Measures include environmentally conscious interventions, using sustainable building materials, offering organic and locally sourced ingredients at the on-site restaurant, and maintaining a family-run business model spanning three generations. The resort’s efforts earned it the “Good Travel Seal” from the Green Destination Foundation, making it the first snow resort in the world to receive the accolade.

Dedicated Team and a Bright Future

The park’s success is thanks to its team of up to 15 shapers, snowcat operators, and marketing staff, who tirelessly ensure smooth operations and constant improvements. Input from the AbsolutPark Freeski and Snowboard Team, comprised of local and international professionals, also plays a crucial role.

Exciting Plans for the Anniversary Season

For its 25th season, AbsolutPark will debut a brand-new snowpark line near the Lumberjack Shuttle toward Kleinarl. Additional special obstacles and a 25-meter-long Challenger Rail will provide opportunities for extra competitions throughout the season. Events like JibKing, SpringBattle, and the ZSAEP Experience will see innovative upgrades, alongside team weeks with key partners. A special edition of AbsolutPark merchandise and exclusive ski, snowboard, and goggle models will also be available.

AbsolutPark is well-prepared for the next 25 years, promising remarkable sporting moments, countless unforgettable experiences, and plenty of fun for riders of all skill levels. Regular updates will be available on the park’s website and social media channels to keep freestyle fans informed.
