It’s been a wacky month of March so far on the World Cup freeski circuit. Two weeks ago, the war in Ukraine NEARLY SHUT DOWN THE WORLD CUP SLOPESTYLE EVENT IN BAKURIANI, GEORGIA. This week, it was the wind that got in the way of the next event, the slopestyle in Tignes, France on 10-12 March, 2022.
Out of the four events scheduled to take place in Tignes (men’s and women’s qualifications, men’s and women’s finals), only the men’s qualifications on Thursday actually happened. Heavy winds shut down the women’s qualifications on Friday and continued through the weekend, forcing a cancellation of both men’s and women’s finals.
Switzerland´s Kim Gubser sends a run for the crowd in Tignes.
Nevertheless, a podium was determined based on the results from the men’s qualis. The unsuspecting winner turned out to be top qualifier Birk Ruud of Norway, who snagged a score of 88.5 with the help of both-way switch 270 tricks in the top rail tiers, followed by a whirlwind right double cork 1440 safety and a left double cork 1620 mute. After a switch left misty 900 on the last jump, he polished his run off with a backslide cork 450 on the rainbow rail.
1st Place (Qualification) | Birk Ruud | 2022 Tignes World Cup Slopestyle
Second place went to Canada’s Max Moffatt, who kicked off his run with a big switch right disaster 450 onto the flat-down, followed by a snappy blind swap to cork 450 out of the up rail. In the jumps, he linked a left double cork 1080 double grab into a right double cork 1440 stale to japan (just missing the stale grab) and a right rodeo 7 high critical, before finishing with a backside 450 out.
2nd Place (Qualification) | Max Moffatt | 2022 Tignes World Cup Slopestyle
Sweden’s Jesper Tjäder took third place. Tjäder sent a huge right disaster 450 on, continuing 270 out to kick off his run, followed by a left backside 620 out of the up rail. He then stomped an unorthodox double misty 1080 japan into a big right double cork 1620 mute, before adding a switch right blender 720 tail tap for some style points and a casual switch 270 on to switch to close out his run.
3rd Place (Qualification) | Jesper Tjäder | 2022 Tignes World Cup Slopestyle
The final World Cup slopestyle event of the season follows in Corvatsch, Silvaplana, Switzerland on 24-26 March, 2022.
