Halfpipe jocks saddle up in Calgary for final FIS World Cup halfpipe of the season

By: Scott Naismith February 13, 2025

The 2024/25 World Cup halfpipe season comes to a close this weekend in Calgary, Canada with the fifth and final showdown in the stunt ditch. For the fourth year in a row, the halfpipe season will be concluded at the Winter Olympic Park for the Calgary Snow Rodeo event.

The halfpipe Crystal Globe is yet to be decided on the women’s side, with Zoe Atkin and Li Fanghui both in contention due to the absence of Eileen Gu. For the men, Alex Ferreira has already done enough to secure his second consecutive Crystal Globe, and third of his career, with an insurmountable lead over the rest of the field.

The Women

Although Eileen is currently leading the rankings, an injury during training in Aspen means that she will not take the start in Calgary. This leaves the door open for Zoe, who needs at least a third place finish to secure her first Crystal Globe of her seven-season World Cup career. Zoe won the most recent World Cup in Aspen but Li is also in fine form having taken silver at X Games the week earlier. If Li can win, and Zoe misses the podium, the Globe will be going to China. Which one of the pair will be able to handle the pressure best and lasso themselves the coveted Crystal Globe?

The Guys

After what was the most insane competition in Aspen – despite the Crystal Globe already having been settled – the men’s contest will be one to watch. There were seven scores in the nineties in a high-scoring final in Aspen and as long as conditions are favourable, the riders will be throwing down again under the lights.

Last week, the young Kiwis made good on their promise and landed the runs of their lives – Finley Melville-Ives landed back-to-back double cork 1620s in his run, a combo pioneered by compatriot Nico Porteous. However, they could not do enough to beat the four experienced Americans, who all laced mind-blowing runs of their own to lock out the top spots. Alex Ferreira has won the last two events on the bounce – this is not his first rodeo either having won twice in Calgary last year – but the likes of Nick Goepper and Hunter Hess have been pushing him all the way. If they can avoid getting bucked, any of the top six from Aspen could take the win and they will surely want to finish the season with a bang.
