Squaw Valley is a monument to snow sport films and culture. Matchstick director Scott Gaffney represents that tradition in Squaw as much as anybody. He took a moment to tell us about his vision in filming the Squaw segment for “Drop Everything.”
The number of legends who have called Squaw home is ridiculous, and I’d argue more movie segments and iconic shots have come out of Squaw’s inbounds terrain than anywhere in the world. But with the passage of time, it occurred to me that there are ripping kids who probably don’t even know who Scot Schmidt is. To me, that’s unacceptable. This mountain and the legends who cut their teeth here have had such a huge impact on our sport. I wanted to remind skiers of that with the Squaw segment in Drop Everything. I wanted to show how badass the Becks were in the 70s, and how crazy it is that what Scot Schmidt was doing 30 years ago still stands the test of time. I wanted to give just a quick little history lesson, and I wanted share Squaw’ legacy. – Scott Gaffney
